~Important carbohydrates~

Those Individuals who select to follow “low-carb diet plans” to help them “lose weight” may miss out on some “important carbohydrates;” which are provided in FIBER.

Fiber is a compilation of complex, “non digestible carbohydrates and lignin,”-which is part of a plant’s cell wall structure. The body cannot absorb fiber, so it contributes no calories to one’s diet.

“The best sources (of fiber) are legumes, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables,” said Sharron Coplin, registered dietitian and instructor at the Ohio State University’s Department of Human Nutrition.

Eating an abundance of “these foods” will ensure that one consumes the expert-recommended 20 to 30 grams of fiber a day, or 14 grams per 1,000 calories consumed. Reaching this “suggested intake “may seem inaccessible, but making “regular fiber-friendly decisions” will help accomplish it.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has “three recommendations for maximizing intake of beneficial carbohydrates “(those rich in fiber) and “minimizing intake of harmful ones” (e.g. sugars, caloric sweeteners). Select “fiber-rich” fruits, vegetables and whole grains often. Prepare foods and beverages with “little” added sugars or caloric sweeteners. Put into practice “good” oral hygiene and consume sugar – and starch – containing foods and beverages less frequently.

Be sure to eat whole fruit (fresh, frozen, canned or dried) as opposed to “juices” which contain very little juice and usually are packed full of sugar. Eat “legumes,” including dried beans and peas, numerous times a week. Make sure at least one-half of daily grain serving consumption is made up of whole grains.

According to the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005, “Diets rich in dietary fiber have been shown to have a number of beneficial effects, including decreased risk of coronary heart disease and improvement in laxation.”

The USDA also reports that “constipation affects 20 percent of individuals over the age of 65,” therefore they recommend “older adults pay meticulous attention to fiber intake.” Children’s diets also need concern when it comes to dietary fiber. It is very important that children consume the “recommended amount of fiber and limit their intake of caloric sweeteners.”

Many people in Ohio may only think about “fiber” when they are “feeling constipated.” Those people who “eat a high-fiber diet are less likely to have high cholesterol levels.” Numerous studies have shown the link between fiber and LDL levels. Fiber is important for heart health.

Unfortunately many people consume diets rich in “highly-processed” white flour products, convenience foods and fast food meals which have “very little fiber.” The American Dietetic Association reports that most of us don’t even come close to the suggested intake of 20 grams to 35 grams of fiber a day.

When a diabetic’s diet is high in fiber, it can slow the absorption of sugar, which can “improve blood sugar levels.”

The Mayo Clinic says dietary fiber is “essential for a healthy diet.”

An increase in fiber consumption can also help aid in those who want to lose weight. High-fiber meals have lower calorie-volume ratios; in other words, a high-fiber meal is more satisfying and you feel full longer.
