Healthy Snacks For Happy Studying In Colorado Springs

Welcome to my Denver children’s health blog. My fifth grader’s elementary teacher recently sent home a note encouraging good homework habits for all of her Colorado Springs students. The note included this suggestion: ‘Eat a healthy snack before sitting down to study.’

My kids and I sat down to brainstorm some healthy snacks they could eat before beginning their homework each afternoon. After compiling our list we headed to our favorite Denver grocery store to stock up on after-school snacks.

Here are my kids top ten healthy homework snacks!

Frozen grapes (or other favorite fruit)
String cheese
Fruit leather
Dried apricots
Nuts
Hummus with veggies
Yogurt
Celery dipped in peanut butter
Fruit smoothies
Popcorn

Denver kids can focus better when they have healthy snacks handy. Another important thing to remember is that kids are more likely to eat healthy snacks if they can choose their favorites. I am a local XoBiotic Squares representative and an advocate for children’s health in Colorado. To learn more about healthy snacking, contact me today at 719.439.0142 or esshields88@msn.com.

Do Your Colorado Springs Kids Get Enough Fiber?

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Do Your Colorado Springs Kids Get Enough Fiber? In the eighties, the importance of fiber garnered a lot of public attention in Colorado. Bran appeared in cereals, muffins, and cookies, and whole wheat bread sales skyrocketed. You don’t hear much about fiber these days, but wise Colorado Springs parents still serve high-fiber meals and snacks daily.

We all know that fiber is important for healthy bowel function, but this is not its only benefit. Denver people who eat a high-fiber diet keep their cholesterol numbers in check. Numerous studies have shown a relationship between fiber intake and LDL levels.

Colorado Springs children fed diets rich in fiber are more likely to maintain a healthy weight. Fiber-filled meals have lower calorie-volume ratios. Fiber is also important for blood sugar, as it can slow the rate of blood sugar absorption.

Do your Denver children get enough fiber? School lunches rarely feature whole wheat breads and most kid-friendly snacks have too little fiber and too many empty calories.

Though it takes a little extra effort to locate fiber rich foods in many Denver grocery stores, everyone in the family will benefit from increasing their fiber intake.

Xocai has several high fiber products that kids love. The Xocai X Protein Meal Shake has 8 grams of fiber per serving. Xocai Activ provides 28% of the daily recommended value for dietary fiber. Xocai healthy snacks and beverages are a great way to help your kids stay healthy.

New Crib Guidelines For Denver Parents

New Crib Guidelines For Denver Parents

First time Denver parents have many issues to deal with as they prepare for the arrival of their little one, but nothing is more important than crib safety. The federal government has issued new guidelines for crib manufacturers.

As of June 28, 2011, all cribs manufactured and sold in Denver and nationally must meet the new standards. The guidelines also apply to used cribs that are resold. Deadly drop-side rail cribs are now prohibited. The new rules also affect crib slat strength, mattress supports, hardware and the amount of testing required.

The new crib guidelines can be found at:

Keep Your Denver Kids Fit

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Keep Your Denver Kids Fit An important element in any Colorado child’s health is physical activity. Most young Colorado Springs children are busy exploring their world and don’t need any encouragement to run, skip, or jump. But spontaneous activities like these may decline during the tween years when most Monument children begin spending more time on indoor activities like TV watching, video game playing, and texting.

As Denver parents we need to be more proactive during these years to make sure our kids are physically fit. Helping them choose a popular Denver sport such as soccer, baseball, or skiing is an excellent way to encourage activity.

Provide active toys such as jump ropes, hula hoops, bikes, and roller blades and limit sedentary activities like movie watching.

Model the physically active behavior you want your Colorado Springs child to have. Take walks with your kids. Take advantage of Denver recreational options. Go snow boarding, swimming, or hiking with them to show them that being active and fit is important to you.

Active Monument kids need healthy between-meal snacks such as dried fruit, nuts, string cheese, and protein bars. As a child’s health advocate in Colorado, I would love to share one of my favorite super-nutritious snacks with you. Please contact me today!

Tips For Feeding Sick Colorado Springs Kids

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Tips For Feeding Sick Colorado Springs Kids

Though the Denver media is more focused on rampant Colorado Springs childhood obesity, there are some underweight children in Colorado.

When Denver kids refuse to eat, it is a challenge for Denver parents to make sure they get proper nutrition.

Understandably, Colorado Springs kids that usually eat normally often lose their appetite when they are sick. Kids who don’t eat much during a two-day bout with the flu will probably have no health issues from the temporary reduction in nutrition.

Colorado Springs children who undergo chemo treatment at Denver hospitals, however, are at greater risk for malnutrition. Ironically, this is the time when adequate calories, vitamins, and minerals are needed the most for ill Colorado Springs children.

Here are some suggestions for helping Denver kids with poor appetites receive adequate nutrition:

Don’t let your Colorado Springs child fill up on beverages before meals, serve liquids between meals
Offer small meals throughout the day
Always have healthy snacks available like protein bars, fruit, and cheese
Alter food temperature to see if it makes the food more appealing to your Denver child
Try smoothies and soups if your sick Colorado Springs child has a hard time swallowing
If your child is turned off by intense smells or flavors, try bland foods with little seasoning

I want every Colorado Springs child to receive excellent nutrition and the best healthcare available in Colorado. I am excited about a new Denver children’s nutrition product and would love to tell you about it. Call me today for more information.
